Directed by Tsai Ming Liang
Released in 2003
Running Time 82 mins
Country of Origin Taiwan
Reasons for watching: Like The Hole, this film is directed
by Tsai a filmmaker whose style is embedded in the criteria of Slow Cinema. He
is referenced in Unspoken Cinema and is also mentioned in a variety of articles
on Slow Cinema.
Usefulness: Many of Tsai’s films make use of extended takes,
use of stillness/static camera, and long periods of silence. This film does the
same. There is very little dialogue in the film, a few interactions mean that
the themes of loneliness and an inability to interact become important elements
of the film. The use of the static camera, long takes, moments of silence mean
that this film is a useful one in determining a corpus for my research project.
Verdict: A
